The Story Behind the Art

Hello, I’m Ilana McBain — an Australian pop artist, philosopher, poet, and creator.

My work explores the complexity of human connection through bold forms, fluid movement, and striking contrasts. Each painting is a visual reflection on how people relate to one another — the spaces where we meet, where we separate, and where meaning quietly forms between us.

Art, for me, is not simply decoration.

It is a way of thinking.

Through my paintings, writing, and creative projects, I explore the emotional structures that shape our lives — trust, intimacy, behaviour, and the fragile agreements that hold human relationships together.

Artistic Vision

My work sits at the intersection of contemporary pop art and philosophical exploration.

I am fascinated by the invisible forces that influence human relationships — attraction, misunderstanding, loyalty, vulnerability, and trust.

These forces rarely move in straight lines. They overlap, collide, separate and reconnect. My paintings reflect this complexity through layered forms and dynamic compositions that invite the viewer to interpret their own emotional narratives within the work.

Rather than offering clear answers, my art creates space for reflection.

Because connection is rarely simple — and that complexity is what makes it meaningful.

Medium & Visual Language

My practice begins digitally, where I design the composition and explore the movement of form.

The works are then produced as museum-quality fine art prints on canvas or archival rag paper, allowing the colours, textures, and contrasts to maintain their intensity and clarity.

Selected collections are also developed as original oil paintings on canvas.

This hybrid process allows me to combine the precision of digital design with the emotional depth and physical presence of traditional painting.

The result is work that feels both contemporary and timeless.

Creative Entrepreneurship

My creative path did not begin in the art world alone.

I first trained as a fashion designer, where I developed an early understanding of form, movement and visual composition. I worked within the fashion industry in both Melbourne and Sydney, gaining experience in the design and production environment.

While the industry offered valuable training, it also revealed something important about my personality. The corporate structure of the fashion world did not sit comfortably with me. I realised that what I needed most was creative independence — the freedom to explore ideas and build projects on my own terms.

That realisation led me toward entrepreneurship.

Over the years I founded several creative ventures, including Savage Eyewear, a nationally distributed designer sunglass label, Foxy on Coolum, a restaurant and performance venue that supported local and international artists, and I Love Candles, a successful retail concept with three stores on the Sunshine Coast.

Each of these projects allowed me to explore the intersection of design, creativity and community.

During the global pause of COVID, I made a decision that reshaped my path once again.

Instead of incorporating art into my businesses, I chose to make art the business itself.

Since then my focus has been fully dedicated to developing my artistic practice and sharing the ideas that continue to shape my work.

Philosophy & Writing

My work extends beyond visual art into philosophical writing.

I am deeply interested in human behaviour and the structures that shape our emotional lives — trust, loyalty, fear, intimacy, and the silent expectations we place on one another.

These themes are explored in my book:

Why Partners cheat Understanding Infidelity Choosing Clarity

The book approaches infidelity not through judgement or shame, but through clarity and understanding — encouraging readers to look at human behaviour with honesty and compassion.

For me, both art and writing serve the same purpose:

to create deeper conversations about how we live and connect with each other.

Background

I was born in Belarus and raised in Israel before moving to Australia in the 1990s.

I studied design and film at Sydney Creative Academy, which shaped my early understanding of visual storytelling and conceptual thinking.

Since 2004, I have lived on the Sunshine Coast with my husband and our two daughters.

Throughout my life, creativity has been the constant thread connecting everything I have built.

A Continuing Exploration

Whether through painting, writing, or creative collaboration, my work is driven by one central idea:

understanding ourselves helps us build better connections with others.

Art offers a language for exploring these questions — a language that goes beyond words.

And in that space, new perspectives can emerge.
