Beyond the Break

Beyond the Break looks at the ocean from above, capturing the quiet choreography that happens between waves.

Surfers drift across an expanse of clear blue, each occupying their own small piece of water while collectively becoming part of something larger. Boards, bodies and colour form an almost abstract pattern against the sea, while the approaching break introduces movement and anticipation at the edge of the composition.

The work is less about the moment of catching a wave than the space before it — waiting, watching, repositioning and sharing the ocean with others who have come for the same reason.

Seen from a distance, the surfers become shapes and rhythms. Up close, individual characters begin to emerge.

Beyond the Break brings the openness, energy and freedom of the ocean into an interior without relying on traditional coastal imagery.
