Salt & Sugar came from everything I love about summer — bright colour, hot days, a little attitude and the simple pleasure of eating an ice cream before it melts all over you.

I wanted her to feel confident and completely comfortable in her own world. The oversized sunglasses and hoops give her personality, but there’s also something wonderfully ordinary about the moment. She’s simply enjoying herself.

That’s what this painting is really about — those small, uncomplicated moments that make life feel good. I wanted all that warmth, colour and playful energy to come into the room with her.
