Something about a seagull’s expression always makes me stop and look.

They can be funny, suspicious, confident and completely unapologetic all at once.

With Side Eye, I wanted to focus on that look. The close crop makes it feel like a portrait, and that is what interested me most.

I love painting familiar things in a way that makes you notice them differently. Seagulls are part of everyday coastal life, but when you really look at them, they are full of personality. This one feels observant, slightly cheeky and very sure of itself. That expression is what made me want to paint it.
