Sunflowers have always felt slightly impossible to ignore. They are bold, oversized, a little unruly and completely unapologetic about taking up space.

With Sunflower State of Mind, I wanted to capture that feeling rather than paint a traditional vase of flowers. I pushed the blooms right into the frame, letting them overlap and almost spill beyond it, then used the mustard, cream and raspberry palette to give the whole piece its own energy. This is a painting about choosing the brighter side of things. Not pretending everything is perfect, but allowing colour, beauty and a little optimism to have their moment.

Sometimes a sunflower state of mind is exactly what is needed.
