The 1950s Heatwave
The 1950s Heatwave captures that particular kind of summer when the heat seems to slow everything down.
A woman tilts her face towards the sun beneath a canopy of striped beach umbrella, surrounded by saturated reds, turquoise blues and sun-warmed ochres. There is something nostalgic in the scene, but it isn’t intended as a recreation of the past. It is a memory of summer exaggerated through colour, scale and attitude.
The figure carries a sense of ease and confidence — unhurried, glamorous and entirely absorbed in the moment. Behind her, the intersecting lines of the umbrella bring structure and movement to an otherwise languid scene.
Created for a space that can hold strong colour, The 1950s Heatwave has the presence of a statement work while retaining the warmth and optimism of a day by the sea.
