There is something about those impossibly hot summer days when everything seems brighter — the sky, the beach umbrellas, the swimsuits, even the personalities.

I wanted The 1950’s Heatwave to capture that feeling, but through the glamour and confidence of another era. She isn’t hiding from the heat. She’s completely at home in it — sunglasses on, face to the sun, enjoying every bit of attention the day might bring.

I love the confidence of women in old beach photographs. There was a sense of occasion about going to the beach — beautiful swimsuits, oversized sunglasses and a little bit of theatre. I exaggerated that here with the strong red stripes, turquoise and those wonderfully unapologetic glasses.

For me, this piece is about summer, confidence and the pleasure of being completely comfortable in your own skin.
